research papers
The scattering cross section of grazing-incidence small-angle scattering from thin supported mesoscopically structured polymer films is calculated in the framework of the distorted-wave Born approximation. The two cases of parallel and perpendicular lamellar orientation are considered.
research papers
Structure determination was successfully carried out using single Laue exposures from a group of lysozyme crystals. The Laue method may be a viable option for collection of one-shot-per-crystal data from microcrystals.
laboratory notes
A simple sample-changing robot has been designed and built for combinatorial studies using grazing-incidence scattering.
computer programs
The computer program DPC toolkit is a simple and user-friendly tool that identifies the unit-cell lattice parameters of a crystal structure that are consistent with a given set of two-dimensional grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering data.
research papers
An overview of recent developments in multilayer optics at CHESS, covering high-resolution multilayers, small d-spacing multilayers, wide-bandpass optics and multilayers on CVD SiC substrates.
laboratory notes
The successful application of single-bounce X-ray focusing capillary small-angle X-ray scattering measurements on proteins, without loss of resolution, is presented.
research papers
Scanning microbeam small-angle X-ray scattering is used to characterize a thermoset resol/poly(isoprene-block-ethylene oxide) nanocomposite on multiple length scales with respect to homogeneity and microphase separation.

Errors in the article by Smilgies [J. Appl. Cryst. (2019), 52, 247–251] are corrected.
laboratory notes
Light scattering and small-angle scattering data indicate that for globular proteins the relation between molecular weight and radius of gyration follows a power law which can be related to the fractal dimension of the proteins.
research papers
Lamellar thin films are an important class of soft materials. For such systems, grazing-incidence scattering with an area detector close to the incident plane is simulated.
research papers
Interpretation of X-ray fluorescence images of archeological artifacts is complicated by the presence of surface relief and roughness. Using two symmetrically arranged fluorescence detectors in a back-reflection geometry, the proper X-ray fluorescence yield can be distinguished from intensity variations caused by surface topography. This technique has been applied to the study of Roman inscriptions on marble.
short communications
A modified choice of unit-cell vectors resolves an apparent discrepancy in the indexation of the most intense para-sexiphenyl reflections compared with those of the other known para-phenylenes.

research papers
Reciprocal space mapping has been applied to map scattering rods of well oriented organic microcrystals. Formulae are provided to correct image distortions and to determine the required oscillation range for properly integrated intensities.
research papers
The Troika II beamline at ESRF provides versatile instrumentation for surface X-ray scattering methods from liquid and solid surfaces, interfaces, and thin films.
research papers
A statistical approach is used to define the long molecular axis and the main molecular plane. From the molecular axes and planes, the orientation of the molecule with respect to the lattice as well as intermolecular orientations can be characterized.
research papers
Thin supported films of small aromatic molecules have been found to display a pronounced polymorphism. An effective scheme is described to find and index all thin-film reflections based on previously known molecular structures, thereby identifying reflections due to novel thin-film phases.
addenda and errata
A poor divergence value in the paper by Smilgies [J. Appl. Cryst. (2009), 42, 1030-1034
] is corrected.
research papers
Various aspects of the application of the Scherrer formula to grain-size analysis in thin films of soft materials are discussed within the methodology of grazing-incidence small- and wide-angle scattering and in conjunction with the use of area detectors.
