The hardback edition of the title book, published in 2013 and reviewed by Helliwell in Acta Crystallographica Section A in 2014[Helliwell, J. R. (2014). Acta Cryst. A70, 92-94.], contained some typographical errors concerning initials of authors and historical dates. In the new paperback edition now available, all these errors have been corrected, resulting in over 200 changes; further explanatory notes and some new material have also been added to the text and to footnotes, and a few illustrations have been replaced by new versions. Although the Oxford University Press website and flyer do not state it explicitly, this paperback edition should be considered a corrected version of the hardback edition.
