Pb2Fe2Ge2O9, the Germanate Analogue of the Silicate Mineral Melanotekite

Synopsis: Pb2Fe2Ge2O9 is isostructural with melanotekite, Pb2Fe2Si2O9, and is built up of zigzag chains of edge-sharing FeO6 octahedra, linked via Ge2O7 groups and PbII cations. The stereoactivity of the PbII electron lone pairs is revealed by the strongly anisotropic displacement of one O atom.
