A new sodium calcium germanate with the formula Na2.54Ca1.73Ge3O9 has been synthesized by the flux method. The structure consists of six-membered rings of GeO4 tetrahedra and pseudo-cubic subcells with an edge length of 3.8 Å.
Crystals of the title compounds were grown from a eutectic halide flux. They are isostructural with K4CdCl6 and contain chains of face-shared [IrO6] octahedra and [MO6] trigonal prisms (M is Ca, Mg or Zn).
