A single crystal, 3 × 1.5 × 1 mm, of Cd3Zn3(BO3)4 has been prepared by spontaneous nucleation and its strong second harmonic generation of Nd:YAG laser radiation (λ 1064 nm) has been observed.

A new hydrated double salt, YbCd3Cl9·15H2O, has been synthesized, and its structure has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and compared with that of CeCd4Cl11·13H2O. The structure of the ytterbium compound contains a layered arrangement of Cd octahedra, with a decrease of the coordination number of the rare-earth cation from nine for Ce3+ to eight for Yb3+.

Cs6Mo27S31 is the third member of the Cs2nMo9S11Mo6nS6n+2 series. The crystal structure consists of an equal mixture of Mo9S11S6 and Mo18S20S6 cluster units that are separated by Cs+ cations.

In the title compound, the fundamental building blocks are connected to form infinite chains. These chains are linked via hydrogen bonds, thus forming sheets that are stacked along the [001] direction.

A new borogermanate, (C4H12N2)[(GeO2)3(BO1.5F)2], was solvo/hydro­thermally synthesized. It has a layered structure containing three- and nine-membered rings built from GeO4 and BO3F tetrahedra. The layers are connected through hydrogen bonding via diprotonated piperazine cations located between the layers.
