(a) Diagram showing the 13 key data-model packages (and the number and direction of the relationships between them) that describe all aspects of tracking experimental work in a collaborative multi-user environment. The package .model.core is referenced by all other packages and defines properties which can be recorded for any object in the database. (b) A simplified diagram showing the relationships between the essential PiMS concepts. The icons are used throughout PiMS to indicate object types. The `1's and `*'s on the red lines indicate one-to-many and many-to-many relationships. For example, a Sample is the output of a single experiment, but it can be used as the input to many experiments.
