The structure of the active-site mutant D199N shows a methylthio­adenosine molecule in the active site (a). In contrast to the wild-type structure, in the crystal structure of the D199N mutant both subunits of the dimer are in the ligand-bound form and show an intermediate state in the enzymatic reaction. The structure can be used to model the futalosine substrate (in purple) into the active site (b) to identify other important interacting residues.
