Molecular model of the ICAM-5 homophilic cell adhesion complex. Two sets of ICAM-5 molecules from two different cells interact and form a trans/trans zipper adhesive structure (Aricescu & Jones, 2007BB2). The complex was generated in the monoclinic crystal lattice by molecules assembled as in Supplementary Fig. 3(c). Molecules at the edges of the zipper are shown with domains D1–D5 coloured as in Fig. 1[link], whereas the other molecules are green or brown. The ICAM-5 extracellular (D6–D9, ovals) and transmembrane (cylinder) domains and the cell surface are shown in grey.
