Photochemical formation of 2-acetyl-7-methylbenz[e]indole

Abstract: The title compound, C₁₅H₁₃NO, was obtained on irradiation of N-acetyl-2-(2-methylstyryl)pyrrole. It was characterized spectroscopically and by X-ray diffraction. The molecule is a planar system of three annelated rings (toluene, benzene and pyrrole). An intermolecular hydrogen bond (N-HO) is observed, connecting molecules into a chain.
