1-(4-Carboethoxyphenylmethyl)-2-ethoxynaphthalene

Abstract: While attempting to prepare the ethyl ester of (E)-1-(4-carboxyphenylmethylene)-2-tetralone, (I), C₁₈H₁₄O₃, the unexpected product 1-(4-carboethoxyphenylmethyl)-2-ethoxynaphthalene, (II), C₂₂H₂₂O₃, was obtained. Compound (II) crystallizes in space group P, with molecules paired by -stacking of the naphthalene moieties around inversion centres.
