1,2-Di-3-thienyl-2-hydroxyethanone (3,3'-thenoin)

G. Crundwell, T. Meskill, D. Sayers and K. Kantardjieff

Abstract: The title compound, C10H8O2S2, is the 3-thienyl symmetric analog of benzoin. 3,3'-Thenoin can be synthesized in good yield utilizing the benzoin condensation reaction (starting with 3-thiophenecarboxaldehyde). The crystal structure of 3,3'-thenoin has been determined at room temperature. There are two independent molecules per asymmetric unit and each has a thienyl ring flip disorder involving one of the two rings in each molecule.
