Manganese(II) sulfate tetrahydrate (ilesite)

Abstract: The title compound, Mn(SO₄)·4H₂O, contains centrosymmetric bis(-sulfato-O:O')bis[tetraaquamanganese(II)] dimers, with two cis-located bridging sulfate anions and two coordination octahedra around manganese(II) forming eight-membered rings. The manganese cations are surrounded by six O atoms of four water molecules and two sulfate groups, forming a slightly distorted octahedron. The [Mn(H₂O)₄(SO₄)]₂ rings are linked by hydrogen bonds of weak to medium strength.
