(Z)-[alpha]-Chloromethyl-3,3',4,4'-tetramethoxystilbene

R. Stomberg, V. Langer, S. Li and K. Lundquist

Abstract: The title compound, C19H21ClO4, adopts a non-planar conformation. The angle between the aromatic ring planes is 75.74  (6)°. The angle between the plane of the aromatic ring attached to the C atom carrying the chloromethyl substituent and the plane defined by the ethylene group and the atoms attached to it is 40.60  (6)°. The angle between this latter plane and the plane of the second aromatic ring is 35.29  (6)°. The arrangement of the molecules in the crystal lattice can be attributed to weak C-H...O and C-H...Cl hydrogen bonding. Stereoisomers of methyl 2,3-bis(4-acetoxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-propenesulfonate are assigned, based on 1H NMR spectral comparisons with the title compound and the isomeric E form.
