Hydrogen-bonding in 4-(hydroxymethyl)imidazolium picrate

Abstract: The title compound, C₄H₇N₂O⁺·C₆H₂N₃O₇^-, crystallizes in space group P2₁ with one ion pair in the asymmetric unit. Strong N-HO and O-HO hydrogen bonds, together with weak C-HO contacts between the two components, generate a two-dimensional layered structure containing R₁²(6), R₂¹(7), R₃³(10) and R₅⁵(24) rings. These layers are further connected by an additional C-HO interaction, resulting in an extensive three-dimensional hydrogen-bonding network.
