Abstract: The reaction of phosphorus pentachloride with phenyl salicylate yielded a compound of chemical formula C13H9Cl4O3P, which was originally thought to contain a P-O-C heterocycle. The true molecular structure has now been established by the determination of its crystal structure. There are two molecules in the asymmetric unit.
