Azidotriphenylsilane: a new determination

I. Wharf and F. Bélanger-Gariépy

Abstract: The title compound, (I), C18H15N3Si, is monomeric with quasi-tetrahedral geometry around Si. The azide group (-N[alpha]-N[beta]-N[gamma]) is disordered. One form has (N[alpha]-N[beta]) > d(N[beta]-N[gamma]); the other has d(N[alpha]-N[beta]) < d(N[beta]-N[gamma]). In contrast, the mesityl analogue, (II), has d(N[alpha]-N[beta]) only slightly less than d(N[beta]-N[gamma]). As expected, on going from (I) to (II), d(Si-N[alpha]), d(Si-C)ave and angle (C-Si-C)ave increase, while angle (C-Si-N[alpha])ave decreases.
