Abstract: The crystal structure of the title compound, C10H8BrNO3, establishes that condensation of 4-bromoaniline with maleic anhydride gives the title compound at room temperature. There are strong intermolecular N-H
O hydrogen bonds [N
O = 2.814 (3) Å and 2.817 (3) Å] linking the molecules into sheets lying parallel to the bc plane. The carboxyl groups adopt an anti-planar conformation and participate in intramolecular O-H
O hydrogen bonds [O
O = 2.484 (3) and 2.487 (3) Å]. There are two molecules in the asymmetric unit.
