An orthorhombic polymorph of naphthalene-2,3-dicarbonitrile

Abstract: The achiral title compound, C₁₂H₆N₂, crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric space group P2₁2₁2₁. Its structure is compared with that of the triclinic polymorph, which crystallizes with two independent molecules in space group P1. In the crystal structure, the molecules stack along the a direction, and zigzag chains, extending in the b direction, are formed owing to the presence of C-HN intermolecular contacts.
