Abstract: In the title salt, C₂₀H₂₁N ${}_{2}^{+}$ ·C₇H₇SO ${}_{3}^{- }$ ·H₂O, the quinolinium cation exhibits a large molecular non-linear optical (NLO) response, as determined by Stark spectroscopy, but crystallization in the centrosymmetric space group P $\overline{1}$ precludes significant bulk NLO effects. Intermolecular O-HO and weak C-HO hydrogen bonding links the constituent molecules into a three-dimensional network.
