Abstract: The squarate dianion in the crystal structure of the title compound, [Cd(C₄O₄)(C₈H₇N₃)(H₂O)₂]_n, links the heterocycle-chelated water-coordinated Cd atoms into a zigzag chain. The O atoms of the squarate dianions are aligned trans to each other in the octahedron surrounding the Cd atom. There are two independent square dianions and both lie on inversion centers.
