A trinuclear mixed-valence manganese carboxylate: tris(acetic acid-O)-₃-oxo-hexakis(₂-trichloroacetato-²O:O')trimanganese(II,III,III)

Abstract: The title mixed-valence manganese carboxylate, [Mn₃(C₂Cl₃O₂)₆O(C₂H₄O₂)₃], was synthesized starting from an acetic acid solution of Mn(CCl₃COO)₂·3H₂O, CCl₃COOH and KMnO₄. The molecule features a planar trinuclear ₃-oxo-centered manganese(II,III,III) complex. Differences in the geometric parameters of the Mn atoms due to strong Jahn-Teller effects in the Mn³⁺ ions allow the metal atoms with oxidation states +2 and +3 to be distinguished.
