Abstract: The title compound, C17H16O5, an (E)-1-(4,6-dihydroxy-2,3-dimethoxyphenyl)-3-phenylprop-2-en-1-one, was isolated from a plant of genus Cryptocarya costata. The molecule adopts a trans configuration with respect to the positions of the benzene ring and the dihydroxydimethoxybenzaldehyde fragment about the olefinic C=C double bond. The molecules are linked by intermolecular hydrogen bonds to form ribbons extending parallel to the b axis.
