N]copper(II)Abstract: The centrosymmetric title compound, [Cu(C7H8O3S)2(H2O)4], forms a pillared hydrogen-bonded layered network. The coordination geometry of the CuII ion is distorted octahedral, involving four aqua ligands and two N-atom donors of two 2-(4-pyridyl)ethanesulfonate (PES) ligands. The sulfonate group of PES is not involved in coordination to the metal, but participates in hydrogen bonds with the aqua ligands.
