In the title compound, [CuCl
2(C
14H
12N
2)(H
2O)], there are two molecules in the asymmetric unit; both Cu atoms are five-coordinate with a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. Molecules are linked into a three-dimensional network by O—H
Cl and C—H
Cl hydrogen bonds. The packing is stabilized by π–π interactions between the phenanthroline ring systems.
