Abstract: Redetermination of the structure of manganese octamolybdenum undecaoxide, Mn1.44Mo8O11, revealed a doubling of the unit cell. The structure consists of infinite chains of trans-edge-sharing Mo6 octahedra cross-linked through O atoms to delimit tunnels in which the disordered Mn2+ cations reside. In comparison with the previous refinement [Carlson et al. (1989). J. Less Common Met. 156, 325-339], the metallic chains exhibit a pairwise distortion, as expected from theoretical calculations.
