Abstract: The title compound, 3,4,8,9,10-pentahydroxy-2-hydroxy-methyl-2,3,4,4a,6,10b-hexahydropyrano[3,2-c]isochromen-6-one hemihydrate, C13H14O9·0.5H2O, is a naturally occurring isocoumarin isolated from Rivea hypocrateriformis. The molecule contains three six-membered rings, viz. an aromatic ring, a glucopyranose ring and a [delta]-lactone ring. The water molecule lies on a twofold axis. The crystal structure is stabilized by an extensive network of O-H...O hydrogen bonds and C-H...O and C-H...[pi] interactions.
