Abstract: The two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit of the title compound, C₁₁H₁₁NO₃, show similar conformations. In both molecules, there is an intramolecular O-HO hydrogen bond and the ethoxycarbonyl substituent is almost coplanar with the indole ring system. C-HO and C-H interactions link the molecules into a ladder-like structure along the b axis.
