Abstract: The title compound, {(C10H10N2)[Mn2(HCO2)2(SO4)2(C10H8N2)2(H2O)2]·2H2O}n, consists of centrosymmetric 4,4'-bipyridinum (H2bpy2+) cations, ladder-like polymeric [Mn2(HCOO)2(SO4)2(bpy)2(H2O)2]n anionic chains and solvent water molecules. The Mn atom is coordinated in a distorted octahedral geometry, and edge-shared centrosymmetric bi-octahedra are formed through monoatomically bridging formate anions. The polymeric chains are generated from binuclear units bridged by 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy) ligands and assembled into two-dimensional layers, with the voids filled with H2bpy2+ cations.
