[2-Methyl-3-methylsulfanyl-1-(benzofuran-5-yl)]acetic acid

Abstract: The title compound, C₁₂H₁₂O₃S, was prepared by the Lewis acid-catalyzed reaction of 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid with -chloro--(methylsulfanyl)acetone. The 1-benzofuran ring system is nearly planar. The structure is stabilized by intermolecular aromatic - interactions between the furan rings of the benzofuran group, H₂C-H interactions and inversion-related intermolecular O-HO hydrogen bonds between the carboxyl groups.
