(3-Methylsulfanyl-2-phenyl-1-benzofuran-5-yl)acetic acid

Abstract: The title compound, C₁₇H₁₄O₃S, was prepared by the Lewis acid-catalysed reaction of 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid with 2-chloro-2-(methylsulfanyl)acetophenone. The 1-benzofuran ring system is nearly planar. The crystal structure is stabilized by aromatic - stacking interactions and inversion-related intermolecular O-HO hydrogen bonds between the carboxyl groups.
