Bis(triethylammonium) tetrachloridomanganate(II)

Abstract: The title compound, (Et₃NH)₂[MnCl₄], was obtained unexpectedly in an attempt to prepare a carboxylate-bridged coordination network. It is the first reported structure of a tertiary ammonium salt of the tetrahedral [MnCl₄]^2- anion (Table 1). Each of the two crystallographically independent cations forms an N-HCl hydrogen bond to the anion (Table 2), generating discrete ion triples. The Mn-Cl bonds involving the hydrogen-bonded Cl atoms are longer than the others.
