Poly[[[diaquabis(1,10-phenanthroline)samarium(III)]-tri-[mu]2-oxalato] tetrahydrate]

Abstract: The title complex, {[Sm2(C2O4)3(C10H8N2)2(H2O)2]·4H2O}n, is a coordination polymer containing oxalate and 1,10-phenanthroline ligands. Each of the two symmetry-independent SmIII atoms is coordinated by six O atoms from three oxalate ligands, two N atoms from a 1,10-phenanthroline ligand and one coordinated water molecule, and the metal atoms display a distorted monocapped square-antiprismatic geometry. The compound forms heavily interconnected layers of oxalate-connected Sm-phenanthroline units. The voids between the individual metal complex units are filled with hydrogen-bonded interstitial water molecules, and within the layers the phenanthroline ligands are arranged in pairs by [pi]-[pi] stacking.
