Abstract: The crystal structure of the title compound, Na+·C2H5O3S2-, commonly known as mesna, has triple-layer sheets normal to the c axis, where the external layers of each set are formed by the anions which coordinate, through their sulfonate O atoms, the cations in the inner layer. The contacts between the outer sides of different sheets involve thiol S and methylene C atoms.
