Abstract: The title compound, C13H13ClO4S, was prepared by the oxidation of ethyl 2-(5-chloro-3-methylsulfanyl-1-benzofuran-2-yl)acetate using 3-chloroperbenzoic acid. The O atom and the methyl group of the methylsulfinyl substituent lie on opposite sides of the plane of the benzofuran fragment. The crystal structure is stabilized by intermolecular aromatic
-
interactions, with a centroid-centroid distance of 3.609 (2) Å between the benzene rings of neighboring molecules, and by two intermolecular C-H
O hydrogen bonds.
