Abstract: In the title compound, C22H20N2O, the piperidinone ring adopts an envelope conformation. The unequal twists of the 3,5-disubstituted 4-methylphenyl rings [torsion angles 15.7 (1) and 35.7 (1)°] play a role in reducing the molecular symmetry upon crystallization. The structure is a good example of a molecule where competition between intra- and intermolecular interactions is apparent.
