Hexaaquacopper(II) bis(4-hydroxybenzenesulfonate)

Abstract: The title complex, [Cu(H₂O)₆](C₆H₅SO₄)₂, was synthesized hydrothermally. The [Cu(H₂O)₆]²⁺ cations lie on centres of symmetry and exhibit tetragonally elongated coordination geometry, typical of Jahn-Teller-distorted Cu^II complexes. An extensive network of O-HO hydrogen bonds between the coordinated water molecules and the sulfonate groups of the anions links the molecules into layers. The hydroxy groups of the anions form O-HO hydrogen bonds that link between layers.
