2'-(2-Hydroxyethoxy)-1,1'-biphenyl-2-ol

Abstract: The title compound, C14H14O3, was obtained by the Williamson method using 2,2'-dihydroxy-1,1'-biphenyl with chlorohydrin. The asymmetric unit contains two crystallographically independent molecules which differ slightly in the orientations of the hydroxyethoxy side chains. In each independent molecule, an intramolecular O-H...O hydrogen bond is observed. In the solid state, each of the two independent molecules forms an O-H...O hydrogen-bonded centrosymmetric dimer. The crystal packing is further stabilized by C-H...[pi] interactions.
