Abstract: Single crystals of lutetium oxide iodide, LuOI, were obtained as a by-product of the reaction of lutetium metal, rhenium powder and lutetium triiodide, LuI3, in a sealed tantalum container. LuOI crystallizes in the tetragonal PbFCl-type of structure (matlockite), where Lu, O and I are situated on positions with 4mm,
m2 and 4mm symmetry, respectively.
