In the title compound, (C14H16N4)3[PMo12O40]2, the asymmetric unit contains one [PMo12O40]3− anion and one and a half 3,3′-(p-phenyl­enedimethyl­ene)diimidazol-1-ium cations. Each cation links two [PMo12O40]3− anions, which link three cations through N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, generating an infinite supra­molecular chain-like structure.

Comment top

One of the major challenges in polyoxometallate (POM) chemistry is to establish reliable connections between new molecular and supramolecular structures on the basis of intermolecular interactions, because these materials may exhibit cooperative properties typically associated with POM network solids (Desiraju, 1995; Coronado & Gómez-García, 1998). Among various polyoxoanions, Keggin-type polyanions have been indicated as excellent building blocks to construct novel compounds (Inman et al., 2002; Ren et al., 2006; Zheng et al., 2005). In this paper, we present the hydrothermal synthesis and crystal structure of the title compound based on 3,3'-(p-phenylenedimethylene)diimidazol-1-ium ligand (hereafter L), (C14H16N4)3(PMo12O40)2.

The asymmetric unit contains one [PMo12O40]3- anion and one and a half of the protonated H2L2+ cations (Fig. 1). The [PMo12O40]3- anions are typical of Keggin structures. In the two kinds of L molecules the dihedral angles between two imidazole rings from the same L molecule are 0° for the molecule sitting on the symmetry center and 82.1 (3)° for the one in general position, respectively. In addition, each protonated H2L2+ cation links two [PMo12O40]3- anions which link three H2L2+ cations through N—H···O hydrogen bonds to generate an infinite supramolecular chain-like structure (Fig. 2).

Experimental top

A mixture of H3PMo12O40 (0.024 g, 0.13 mmol), L (0.048 g, 0.2 mmol) and H2O (10 ml) was stirred for 1 h, and then transferred and sealed in a 25 ml Teflon-lined stainless steel container. The container was heated to 150 °C and held at that temperature for 72 h, and cooled to 30 °C at a rate of 5 °C h-1. Colorless polyhedron crystals were collected in 49.9% yield.

Refinement top

All H atoms on C atoms were positioned geometrically and refined as riding atoms, with C—H = 0.93–0.97 Å, and Uiso=1.2 or 1.5Ueq (C).
