The title spiro-compound, C20H16N4O, crystallizes with four independent mol­ecules in the asymmetric unit. In all of them, the oxindole unit is planar, the r.m.s. deviations ranging from 0.07 to 0.08 Å, while the pyrrolinyl ring adopts an envelope conformation (with the N atom representing the flap). In the crystal, adjacent mol­ecules are linked by N—H⋯N and N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

Experimental top

Sarcosine (89 mg,1.0 mmol), benzaldehyde (104 mg, 1.0 mmol) and 2-oxo-(3H)-indol-3-ylidine-malononitrile (195 mg, 1.0 mmol) in dry toluene (30 ml) containing molecular sieves (500 mg,3 Å) were heated for five hours. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was subjected to column chromatography on silica gel by using hexane–ethyl acetate (9:1) as eluent to give the product. This was recrystallized from methanol.

Refinement top

Due to the absence of anomalous scatterers, Friedel pairs were merged. Hydrogen atoms were placed in calculated positions (C—H 0.93–0.98, N–H 0.86 Å) and were included in the refinement in the riding model approximation, with U(H) set to 1.2–1.5U(C, N).
