Cover illustration: The title compound, (acetonitrile-[kappa]N)pentacarbonyltungsten(0) is an important precursor in the synthesis of complexes containing the W(CO)5 fragment. The coordination of the tungsten atom is slightly distorted octahedral, with the acetonitrile ligand bound end-on to the W(CO)5 moiety. The trans-influence of the acetonitrile ligand becomes noticeable by a significantly shorter W-C bond of 1.975 (5) Å compared to the cis-carbonyls with W-C bond lengths between 2.023 (5) and 2.056 (5) Å. See Strasser, Cronje & Raubenheimer [Acta Cryst. (2011). E67, m772].

Research communications

The first papers in this new format were published in July 2014. Research communications are longer papers with new text sections designed to help authors bring out the science behind their structure determinations. Figures are included in the published paper and, for the first time in Acta E, individual reports are not limited to single structure determinations. The Research communications format will make Acta E the natural home for structure determinations with interesting science to report.
