Cover illustration: Polynuclear iron(II/III) clusters containing an Fe-O-Fe linkage are simple and useful model compounds for non-heme metalloproteins containing dinuclear iron units in their active sites. The mixed-valent ionic title compound, tris(1,10-phenanthroline)iron(II) -oxido-bis[trichloridoferrate(III)], contains a complex [FeII(phen)3]2+ cation and a dinuclear Cl3FeIII--FeIIICl3 anion composed of two condensed FeOCl3 tetrahedra with a bent bridging angle of 158.4 (3)°. The packing of the crystal structure is consolidated by intermolecular C-HCl interactions. See Ling, Song & Wang [Acta Cryst. (2011). E67, m1232-m1233].
