The process of fitting; the comparison of structures proceeds via decomposition into polyhedra, displacement for coincidence of centres, and rotation, leaving some residual distortion. Comparison of the magnitude of the residual distortions with the magnitudes of the atomic motions reveals the significance of rigid-unit motion.
