(a) $[|\sin \delta |]$ and (b) $[\phi]$ as a function of the two external tilt angles $[\Theta _{1}]$ and $[\Theta _{2}]$ for a quartz plate with approximate orientation 45° to the [0001] direction and thickness 0.14 mm. The measurement was carried out at a wavelength of 600 nm and a total of 441 tilt angles were used. The complete set of measurements with the current set-up took 55 min. The azimuthal angle $[\phi ^{\prime}]$ determining the position of the principal section PS' is found to be equal to 51.1°. PS' is denoted here by a thick white line.
