Schematic diagram of a time-of-flight neutron strain scanner. The elastic strain is measured along the directions of the impulse exchange vector, q1 and q2. The volume of the sample explored by the instrument corresponds to the intersection of incident and diffracted beams, as defined by slits and collimators.
