Comparison between the March-Dollase function [{\rm PO}_{hkl}(\rho)] (black lines) and its Legendre polynomial expansion truncated at the sixth order (dot-dashed red line) versus [\cos(\rho)] for different values of r ranging from 0.7 to 1.5. For all r values, these truncated Legendre polynomial expansions fit the March-Dollase function quite well. To assess this point, the inset displays the relative error between [{\rm PO}_{hkl}(\rho)] and its truncated expansion for different r values.
