The upper schematic drawing illustrates the geometry for scanned monochromatic 3DXM measurements of strain normal to the NiAl matrix face and along the axis of the Mo fibers in an Mo–NiAl metal–matrix composite. The plot below shows the strain in the exposed fibers (square symbols, red line) as a function of depth from the top of the exposed fibers (zero) to 25 µm deep into the matrix. The gray circles and black line correspond to similar measurements made on a similar sample without etching to expose fibers above the matrix surface.
