A typical X-ray transmission image of an eggshell, obtained using the defocused beam. The arrows shows the areas where X-ray scattering patterns were recorded: three vertical scans were made 48  µm apart. The vertical scan length was 500  µm. Samples were bathed in the direct beam. Differential absorbance allows microscopic features to be observed.
