Cover illustration: Three-dimensional representations of domains of polyacrylate and polystyrene comprising micrometer-sized water-filled capsules suspended in water generated by soft X-ray scanning transmission microtomography (see Johansson, Tyliszczak, Mitchell, Keefe and Hitchcock, pages 395-402). Near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy was used to map the polyacrylate distribution by utilizing an absorption peak at 532.2 eV for the O 1s [rightwards arrow] [pi]*(C=O) transition of the polyacrylate.

This paper describes the experimental set-up developed on the LUCIA beamline in order to perform at the same time X-ray and Raman spectroscopy experiments on the same microsized sample spot. Some applications of these two combined techniques on mineral samples are also presented.

The present paper demonstrates the feasibility of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism under pulsed high magnetic fields up to 26 T and low temperatures down to 5 K on the ID24 energy-dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy beamline of the ESRF.

The magnetic field of a cryo-undulator prototype has been measured using a new technique of field mapping using a Hall probe, and the error components in the field profile have been found to be insensitive to temperature.

Differential extended X-ray absorption fine structure (DiffEXAFS) is a novel technique for the study of small atomic strains. Here the development of this technique to the measurement of thermally induced strain is presented. Thermal DiffEXAFS measurements have been performed on α-Fe and SrF2, yielding α = (11.6 ± 0.4) × 10−6 K−1 and (19 ± 2) × 10−6 K−1, respectively. These are in good agreement with accepted values, proving the viability of the technique. Analysis has revealed sensitivity to mean atomic displacements of 0.3 fm.

The use of a grazing angle objective for high-sensitivity in situ synchrotron far-infrared spectromicroscopy in electrochemistry has been demonstrated. The oxide film on a copper microelectrode, at high anodic potential in alkaline solution, has been determined to consist mainly of CuO with a film thickness of about 130 nm.
