Notes for Authors
Proceedings of the XAFS XI Conference

1. Submission for refereeing

Authors should submit three copies of the manuscript, accompanied by a signed Transfer of Copyright Agreement form. Contributions should be prepared on one side of the paper in double-spaced format with wide margins, and should conform to the general editorial style of Journal of Synchrotron Radiation .

Manuscripts should be submitted to:

XAFS XI Conference Secretariat

SPring-8

Mikazuki

Sayo

Hyogo 679-5198

Japan

Every effort should be made to ensure that the submission is made either on or before the opening day of the conference. Papers received after 30 July 2000 will not be accepted for publication.

Electronic files are not required at the submission stage. However, at the acceptance stage authors will be required to submit an electronic version of the manuscript (see §3.1[link] for details of the formats allowed). Authors of Contributed Papers will also be required to submit a camera-ready copy (see §2.2[link]).

2. Categories of contributions

Papers must strictly conform to the length guidelines given below.

2.1. Plenary and Invited Papers

Plenary and Invited Papers will be technically edited and typeset by the IUCr Editorial Office in Chester, i.e. they will not be in camera-ready format. They should not exceed 5 journal pages. This equates to approximately 3600 words including figures and tables (a standard figure equates to 250 words).

2.2. Contributed Papers

Contributed Papers will be printed in camera-ready format. They should not exceed 3 pages in this format. Authors whose papers are accepted for publication will be asked to produce the final camera-ready copy. The camera-ready copy will be reviewed by the IUCr Editorial Office staff, who may request revisions on technical grounds.

3. Manuscript preparation

3.1. File formats

The manuscript should be prepared using Word, TeX or LaTeX. Authors are encouraged to use the templates available from the Editorial Office by e-mail (med@iucr.org) or by ftp (from the `templates/xafsxi' directory at ftp.iucr.org). All Word submissions should be accompanied by an RTF (rich text format) file.

Figures should be sent in PostScript, encapsulated PostScript or TIFF formats. The resolution of bitmap graphics should be a minimum of 1200 d.p.i.

3.2. Title and authors

The title should be short and informative. The contact author should provide an e-mail address and a fax number. The e-mail address will be used for editorial communications and will normally appear in the published paper.

3.3. Abstract and keywords

The Abstract should state concisely the principal results obtained. Ordinarily 200 words will suffice for Invited Papers and 100 words for Contributed Papers. It should make no reference to tables, diagrams, or formulae contained in the body of the paper. Literature references in an Abstract are discouraged. If a reference is unavoidable, it should be sufficiently full within the Abstract for unambiguous identification, e.g. [Smith (1994). J. Synchrotron Rad. 1, 21-31].

Authors should supply at least one and up to five keywords.

3.4. Units

The International System of Units (SI) is used except that the ångström (symbol Å, defined as 10-10 m) is generally preferred to the nanometre (nm) or picometre (pm) as the appropriate unit of length. Recommended prefixes of decimal multiples should be used rather than `× 10n'.

3.5. Figures

Figures should be prepared using one of the file formats listed in §3.1[link]. Each diagram must also be provided in `hard-copy' form. Colour or greyscale figures should be provided as glossy prints; laser printer or photocopier output will generally be unsatisfactory for colour reproduction.

3.6. Tables

Tables produced in Word should be prepared using the Word table editor.

3.7. Mathematics

Authors submitting in Word should use the Word equation editor to prepare displayed mathematical equations.

3.8. Multimedia

Multimedia additions to a paper are welcomed and will be made available via Synchrotron Radiation Online . Please contact the Editorial Office for submission details.

3.9. References

References to published work must be indicated by giving the authors' names followed immediately by the year of publication, e.g. Neder & Schulz (1998) or (Neder & Schulz, 1998). Where there are three or more authors the reference in the text should be indicated in the form Smith et al. (1998) or (Smith et al., 1998) etc. All authors should be included in a full list at the end of the paper. This list should be arranged alphabetically and conform with the following style:

Andrews, M. D., Wright, H. E. & Clarke, S. A. (2000). In preparation.

Brünger, A. T. (1992). X-PLOR. Version 3.1. A System for X-ray Crystallography and NMR. Yale University, Connecticut, USA.

Note that inclusive page numbers must be given.
